Val Gardena perfectly blends Italian warmth with Tyrolean charm — great skiing by day, exceptional food by night
Stretching beneath the dramatic peaks of the Dolomites, Val Gardena is one of Italy's most celebrated ski valleys. Made up of three distinctive villages — Ortisei, Santa Cristina and Selva — this stunning South Tyrolean valley combines world-class skiing with authentic Italian-Tyrolean character, making it a favourite with skiers and snowboarders of all levels.
As the gateway to the legendary Sella Ronda circuit, Val Gardena offers direct lift access to the Dolomiti Superski area — comprising 12 interconnected ski resorts and a remarkable 1,246km of slopes, it is the largest ski area in the world.
With the entire Dolomiti Superski network at your fingertips, the possibilities here are almost endless. Beginners can take their first turns on gentle nursery slopes close to each village, while intermediates will love the long, sweeping runs that wind through pine forests and open alpine bowls.
For more adventurous skiers, the Sella Ronda is a must — a stunning 40km circular route linking four Dolomite valleys via lifts and pistes, with jaw-dropping scenery at every turn. The route can be completed in either direction in a single day and is an experience you will not forget. Selva, the highest village at 1,563m, offers the most direct lift access to the Sella Ronda circuit. Santa Cristina provides easy connections in both directions, while Ortisei has its own extensive ski area on the Alpe di Siusi, one of the largest high-altitude plateaus in Europe.
With 1,246km of pistes to explore across 12 resorts, you could ski here for weeks and never take the same run twice. The modern lift system means minimal queuing, and with snow-sure conditions from December through to April, you are guaranteed excellent skiing throughout the season.
Each of Val Gardena's three villages has its own character, and all come alive in their own way after the lifts close. Selva boasts one of the Dolomites' best après-ski scenes, with lively bars and sun-soaked terraces where you can soak up the atmosphere straight off the slopes. As the evening rolls on, there is plenty of choice, from buzzing cocktail bars to cosy wine rooms serving excellent local vintages.
Santa Cristina offers a more relaxed pace, ideal for those who prefer a peaceful evening after a big day on the mountain. It sits neatly between Selva and Ortisei, with easy access to the skiing on both sides of the valley.
Ortisei is the largest of the three and has the most going on away from the slopes. Its charming pedestrianised centre is full of shops, cafes and galleries, and its culinary scene is among the strongest in the valley. All three villages retain their traditional South Tyrolean charm with wooden chalets and welcoming restaurants serving a mix of Italian and Austrian-influenced cuisine. Think hearty pasta dishes, local dumplings and fine regional wines — the perfect way to refuel after a day on the pistes.
A regular ski bus connects all three villages, making it easy to explore the whole valley throughout your stay.
Val Gardena is an excellent choice for couples and groups looking for a valley that blends superb skiing with great food and a relaxed pace. Selva suits those who want the liveliest après-ski, Santa Cristina is ideal for couples seeking a quieter base, and Ortisei appeals to families and anyone who enjoys a vibrant village atmosphere beyond the slopes.
Families are equally well catered for across the valley, with ski schools offering lessons in English and dedicated children's areas on the slopes. The manageable village sizes and quality infrastructure make all three a comfortable option for those who prefer not to be in a sprawling, impersonal resort.
